CMAL Observer Report

Transportation Committee of Metropolitan Council
February 11, 2008

Observer:  Geneva MacMillan, LWV Minnetonka/Eden Prairie/Hopkins (MEPH)

Reports:
  • Director Metropolitan Transportation Services, Arlene McCarthy, thanked members for attending the "Committee of the Whole" meeting where presentations of Transit Master Study, the Principal Arterial Study and the Transportation Policy Plan were made. Staff will now be meeting with individual counties to present to county boards. Regional meetings are being considered to give more people an opportunity to attend.
  • Brian Lamb, General Manager Metro Transit, reported that a contract with a new advertising company, Titan Outdoor Advertising, is planning innovative ways to advertise at the stations. Metro Transit is considering "station domination graphics", where an advertiser is allowed to control the advertising at a station using poster board, and other graphics. A "Go Greener" theme is being considered.

There were no business items at this meeting.

The remainder of the meeting consisted of items presented as INFORMATION only.

  • Transit System Evaluation
  • Cole Hiniker, Metro Transportation Services Financial Planner, reported on Transit System Evaluation.  By legislative mandate, the report is performed every 4 years.  Information included:  number of routes, type of provider, annual ridership by provider, subsidy numbers, ridership goals, peer comparisons, etc.

  • 2007 Regional Ridership Report
  • Elaine Koutsoukos, Metro Transportation Services Senior Planner, presented 2007 Annual Regional Ridership.  Included was information on:  ridership by provider, by type of service, comparison to 2006, performance by provider type, comparison to 2030 goal and 2007 ridership highlights.  Total ridership 2007 was 89.3 million.

  • Potential Ridership Survey
  • Bruce Howard, Metro Transit, reported on a survey of the 11-county Metro area and Pierce and St. Croix Counties in Wisconsin just completed.  This comprehensive survey included sample questions and responses received giving committee members a detailed knowledge of survey results.

  • Demonstration of Web—Based Mapping capability on Trip Planner
  • Metro Transit staff members John Howley and Art Brakob have been making enhancements to the on-line trip planner available on the web.  A demonstration was given of this planner which will be initiated 2/12/08.  The site has improved maps, schedule of trip legs etc.  Marketing to existing and potentials riders will be the next step.

  • FY 2009 Appropriation Requests
  • Requests from Congress in Washington D.C. include:

    1. capital request for $10 M for Hybrid buses purchased,
    2. Central Corridor request yet to be finalized,
    3. $71.2 M request for Northstar will complete funding for that project.

No CMAL action is needed.  This meeting was primarily for dispensing information.
