Dear Judge Krause and Secretary Kiffmeyer:
The League of Women Voters of Minnesota respectfully requests a public hearing
regarding the Election Rules proposed by the Office of the Secretary of State.
The League believes that a public hearing is to the benefit of the citizens of Minnesota,
especially when the proposed rules concern the important and fundamental constitutional
right to vote.
We believe that the public should be as informed as possible about proposed changes
made to election procedures, especially in view of the confusion resulting from
the requirements of the Help America Vote Act. Because of the very brief time
allowed for public comment on the proposed rules, we fear that the Secretary may
not hear from all concerned constituents.
In addition, we are concerned that the delay of the demonstration of the new
voter registration system to July 29, only a few days before the Secretary is statutorily
required to certify the new system before the Primary Election, is not in the best
interests of Minnesota voters. We believe these are among the issues that
should be openly discussed in a public hearing as a matter of good public policy.
Sincerely,
