Since the founding of our country there has been concern about the potential for wealthy individuals to have an outsized influence on who is elected and whose interests election officials represent. Changes in campaign finance rules in the US over the last 50 years, largely driven by wealthy individuals and advocacy groups and the Supreme Court, have resulted in dramatic increases on spending in elections.
