Part I – Chapter 1

We share a common purpose, mission, vision and values

The League of Women Voters (LWV) was founded in 1920 by leaders of the women’s suffrage movement, following the successful passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution which stated: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” For 100 years, we have been a nonpartisan, activist, grassroots organization that believes voters should play a critical role in democracy.

Our Purpose

LWV encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. LWV is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public.

Our Mission

Empowering voters. Defending democracy.

Our Vision

We envision a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate.

Our Value

We believe in the power of women to create a more perfect democracy.

Our Impact

Our impact is felt nationwide through the work of grassroots volunteers in over 700 state and local Leagues and 500,000+ members and supporters, reaching more than 10 million voters every year and achieving hundreds of voting rights victories. The League of Women Voters of Minnesota has 35 local Leagues and 2,100 members working together to achieve our mission each year.
