We are honored to announce our special guest Cynthia Wilson, President of the NAACP Minneapolis, who will examine the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Louisiana v. Callais that substantially weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, making it significantly harder to strike down or overturn gerrymandered redistricting plans that dilute the voting power of racial minorities. The decision follows the Supreme Court’s ruling in Shelby County v. Holder (2013), which effectively eliminated Section 5’s federal pre-clearance requirement for jurisdictions with histories of voting discrimination. Together, these decisions have severely undermined the Voting Rights Act (1965) raising substantial barriers to challenging discriminatory gerrymandered voting maps, reducing if not eliminating federal protections against racial vote dilution as required by the law, and threatening the political representation of Black and other minority communities.
